New Zealand Supreme Pie Awards 2008

One of the food experiences you have to try when you travel to New Zealand is a pie.  New Zealanders are great lovers of pies – 4 million people eat 68 million of them a year and there isn’t anywhere in the world that has elevated the pie maker’s art to the heights that New Zealand bakers reach.

I mean, where else in the world would they hold a national pie makers’ championship?

This year, the 12th year of the awards, saw 3000 pies entered in 11 categories.

The supreme champion was a chicken and vegetable pie made by Neville Jackson from Jacksons Bakery and Café in Havelock North, Hawkes Bay. His winning pie contained chicken, leek, celery, carrot and broccoli bound with a creamy sauce, flavoured with onion and garlic

It was the second year in a row that Jackson had taken out the supreme award.

His seafood pie also won gold, and no wonder - it contained smoked hoki, prawns, scallops in a lime mornay sauce.  Other entrants in this class included Bill Lenh Liem from Greenland Bakery in Botany, Auckland, with  a recipe of salmon, prawn, clam, red and green peppers, corn in a creamy white wine sauce.

And if that doesn’t start your mouth watering then try the vegetarian pie containing potatoes, carrots, onions, spinach, red and green peppers, broccoli, mushrooms, cauliflower, courgettes in a white sauce. That was another Greenland Bakery winner

Or how about a fruit pie with morello cherry and home cooked apple with mascarpone and cream cheese? Or the gourmet meat pies with ingredients like smokey pork and  watercress, or butter chicken, or beef carbonara?
